Jesse Mercer (1769–1841) was a Baptist minister who moved to Washington, Georgia, in the 1820s. He served as pastor of the Washington Baptist Church and was a founder and the first leader of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He published two newspapers in Washington, The Christian Index and The Temperance Banner. Mercer University, first established in Penfield and later relocated to Macon, was named in his honor.
