In this landmark work, Keynes challenged the classical belief that markets naturally return to full employment. He argued that prolonged unemployment could persist when aggregate demand was too weak to sustain economic activity. In such periods, he maintained, government spending and monetary intervention were necessary to stimulate demand and restore growth.
Keynes’s final and most influential book transformed modern economic thought, established macroeconomics as a distinct field of study, and reshaped economic policy throughout the twentieth century.
