The Proletarian Party of the United States (PPUSA) was a Marxist political organization formed in the early 20th century, emerging from a split with the Socialist Party of America in 1920. Grounded in orthodox Marxist theory, the PPUSA emphasized the importance of a scientifically educated working class to lead a revolutionary transformation of society. Unlike other leftist groups of the time, the Proletarian Party rejected electoralism and advocated for the eventual overthrow of capitalism through class struggle and the establishment of a socialist state. Although the party never gained mass support, it remained active for several decades, focusing on Marxist education, theoretical development, and criticism of both capitalist systems and what it viewed as the distortions of Marxism by other leftist factions. It is best remembered for carrying forward Charles H. Kerr & Co., the oldest publisher of Marxist books in the United States.
