Yvette Hawkins was an actress who before her roles in films such as Mighty Aphrodite, Lean on Me, and Mississippi Masale was involved with the New Lafayette Theater in Harlem. The theater's objective was to produce theater by black people for black people to reflect the contemporary black experience. She went on to became a major part of the Black Arts Movement with Ed Bullins as its playwright in residence.
