A collection of prison-written essays by Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga, activist-scholar and creator of the Pan-African holiday Kwanzaa, Essays on Struggle reflects on his role in the 1960s Black Power era while offering a sustained analysis and critique of the Black Liberation Movement. Written largely during Karenga’s incarceration following his conviction for assaults, the essays first appeared in the journal The Black Scholar and trace the early formation of ideas he would later systematize in Kawaida Theory (1980).
